Exploring the perceived effectiveness and experience of parent education program based on psychodrama : Focusing on empathy ability and parenting behaviors

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a parent education program applying psychodrama on parents' empathy and parenting behaviors and their experience in the program. For the study, seven mothers who are currently nurturing infants and young children participated in a parent education programs using psychodrama. The result of pre and post test between program participants and a control group, which was also composed of seven ordinary mothers, on their empathy ability and parenting behaviors was statistically compared using Wilcoxon singed-rank test. In addition, qualitative interview data of participant was collected in order to explore their overall experience of program participation as well as the change of their empathic ability and parenting behavior. The empathic ability and change in parenting behavior are deductively analyzed based on the established theoretical components. The experience of participation and the process of change were inductively analyzed through open-coding and constant comparison. The results showed that parent education program using psychodrama had a significant effect on the empowerment of the participants. In the parenting behaviors, it affected only the affection and overprotection. The analyzed interview data also indicated positive effectiveness of the program supporting statistical result. In specific, the perception and experience of participating in parent education program using psychodrama can be organized into six main categories: self-understanding, emotional expression, perceptional change, role-taking experience, group experience, and recognition of others. The results of this study would provide meaningful insights for discussions regarding the diversification and improvement of the subject and method of parent education program in the future.
